Allegory
... of this story is that people may pretend the
things they cannot have are not worth having.
Allegories had their greatest popularity during medieval and Renaissance times
in Europe. The Divine Comedy, written by the Italian author Dante Alighieri in
the early 1300's, literally tells of a man's journey to heaven through hell and
purgatory. Allegorically, the poem describes a Christian soul rising from a
state of sin to a state of blessedness. Other allegories include the parables
of Jesus, and The Faerie Queene, written by the English poet Edmund Spenser in
the late 1500's.

Columbine High School
... safe, school? The answer to the question is simple, they shouldn't, no one should. School. A place of education, a place where most people met they friends, and discover what they want to be. School should be a place of safety. An environment where metal detectors should not be needed, and firearms should not be carried. But for some reason, rather it be a lack of morals, knowledge, or values, people believe they need these things. Without people like that in this world, fifteen people would still be alive, parents and friends would not be suffering the loss of loved ones, and a nation would not be mouring. T ...

At the beginning of Great Expectations, Pip is seven years old. Pip is vulnerable at such an early age. Greek Values In "The Odyssey"
... food from the suitors. One man, Antinous, berates him and refuses so much as a crust. He even hurls his footstool at Odysseus, hitting him in the back. This makes even the other suitors nervous, for sometimes the Gods masquerade as mortals to test their righteousness. The suitors fright showed they respected the Gods because they were afraid of the punishment they would receive for not being hospitable.
This leads to the next value of the Greeks. Hospitality is very important such that you serve a stranger before you know his name. An example of this was when Eumaeus the swineherd welcomes Odysseus disguised ...

Put Myself In My Shoes
... that in becomes the title of the story. What is different about this story, however, is its self-consciousness, its concentration on the role of the writer. In many ways, "Put Yourself in My Shoes" can be seen as Carver's comment on his own career, on storytelling itself.
Myers is a writer, although he hasn't sold anything yet and is currently not writing. He has quit his job to pursue his muse, but with little success. As the story opens he is depressed, " between stories and [feeling] despicable", when his wife calls to invite him to the office Christmas party. But he doesn't want to go, mainly because th ...
