Emerson's “Self-Reliance”: Optimistic But Unrealistic For The 21st Century
... merit we ascribe to Moses, Plato and Milton is that they set at
naught books and traditions and spoke not what men, but what they thought.”
It is good for us to know that these great people listened to what they
thought was true and not others. Perhaps we are great too but are too
afraid to speak out and be heard for fear that our ideas are worthless. We
feel as though we are misunderstood and are not worthy of such popularity.
Emerson makes a good point when he says not to overlook today’s
youth. I think we need to put things into perspective and realize that kids
aren’t going to stay kids forever. T ...

... form of love is found in the family. From the time a child is born, in usual circumstances, that child is loved unconditionally. A person grows up with their family, and is able to express who they really are. Because of this, ties within the family are usually quite strong. Take for example the relationship between Idgie and Buddy: Idgie (Imogene), a dare-devilish tomboy, and her older brother Buddy are quite close until Buddy's untimely death. Idgie takes his passing with difficulty: "You never saw anybody hurt so much. I thought she would die right along with him" (Flagg, p.37). Another example of the love fe ...

... that tree”(pg 38) This quote reveals that the two siblings felt that Boo was a harmful person because of false rumors. Stereotypes are easily picked up, and used to horrible extreme when a large majority of people use them. This was the case with Scout and Jem when they picked up on the stereotypes going around the neighborhood about Boo. “When I got there, my breeches were all folded and sewn up”(pg 63) When Boo sewed Jem’s breeches together, this was a sign from Boo to let the children realize what a kind and pleasant man he really was. Also, Boo was considerate enough to save Je ...

Guilt As Reparation For Sin In
... live with guilt for the sins they have committed.
Nathaniel Hawthorne’s elaborately descriptive writing style has been studied and criticized by people all over the world for years. Hawthorne has been thought of as one of the greatest writers in history, but his unique style has also been negatively criticized and disapproved of. No matter the opinion of his works, the people who knew him personally respected Hawthorne. “On the day after Hawthorne’s funeral, in May 1864, [Ralph Waldo] Emerson wrote in his journal: ‘I thought him a greater man than any of his works betray…’ ...

Emily Dickinson
... Sun—," sets a slow, quiet,
calm, and dreamy atmosphere (5, 9, 11, 12). "One thing that impresses us," one author
wrote, "is the remarkable placidity, or composure, of its tone" (Greenberg 128). The tone
in Dickinson’s poem will put its readers’ ideas on a unifying track heading towards a
boggling atmosphere.
Dickinson’s masterpiece lives on complex ideas that are evoked through symbols, which
carry her readers through her poem. Besides the literal significance of —the "School,"
"Gazing Grain," "Setting Sun," and the "Ring"—much is gathered to complete the poem’s

A Bird Came Down The Walk
... Meter plays a very important role in poems because it gives the poet another tool to help convey the feeling of the poem.
Dickinson used this metrical pattern to convey to the reader that the bird did not feel natural on the ground. The meter forces the poem to be read very jumpy and quick, much like how a bird acts while on the ground. Even though the bird is on the ground for a short amount time it still acts cautiously because its natural habitat is in the sky.
And the he drank a Dew
From a convenient Grass–
And then hopped sidewise to the Wall
To let a Beetle pass–
When the bird finally flies away the po ...

... adversary positions". This idea played a major role in and will be looked at in greater depth as I explore the true meaning of honor and how it played an equal role in this story. At this time, I pose the question, "what is honor ?".
Honor is the feeling or expression of admiration, respect or esteem. To whom did the Executioner's honor belong? To Headquarters? To ? Well, this changed, not only in direction but also in intensity. At first, the Executioner mentioned his first experiences of killing the enemy-soldiers headquarters had handed down to him. He described them as "delicate assignments". The first time, ...

... Therefore, thinking led him to doubt, which led to inaction. "Thus conscience does make cowards of us all." Hamlet's "tragic flaw" is his inability to act on impulse.
Stopping to think before acting cost Hamlet numerous opportunities to get revenge. He ironically passed up his most obvious opportunity when Claudius was praying in the church. He wanted to wait until Claudius was doing something that had "no relish of salvation in 't."
We are like Hamlet, at times. the more we think of doing something, the more we find wrong with it. Hamlet decided to stay with his troubles in life rather than commit suicid ...

... and way of living.
The family way forced to give up their religious beliefs and convert to another faith. This had a strong effect on how the family was to function, because they already had rules, regulations, and guidelines to follow that dealt with the religion they were with. When they were forced to change, everything was forced to change with it, like what they ate, what they did, how they acted, etc. This played a big role in the killing of the family, because what it eventually did was break up the family so that it was sort of dysfunctional. The family suffered severely from the change in religion.

People's Behavior And The Affect Of Social Situations
... time.
This experiment probably wouldn't be ethical now, but at the time no one knew what would happen, so I think the experiment wasn't unethical. I never would've expected this to happen. I thought the students would just wait the time out and leave when it was over. I had no clue the experiment would have such an affect on them. This experiment was useful in that it showed people that the environment does have an impact on behavior. It was also realistic, because there have been cases of mental illness in jails and things like this have happened in real life.
The second experiment was the ROTC Experiment. In thi ...
