Capote did not begin the book with the murder scene. Instead, he  gave the reader a view of the Clutters as people, not just as victims. There  is a chance for the reader to get to know and like the Clutters before they  are murdered. And he could have given the description of the murders at  the point  they appeared, but he waited to give those details until Perry's  confession.
