Gambling: Losing The Gamble
... the baby in her arms. First she was concerned, but then she lost it when I told her the news. "What the hell have you done? The last thing we can afford is your gambling. There is no groceries and the baby needs formula." I knew all this, but I got caught up in the gambling fever. There was no way I could make it up. I was depressed for weeks and this was just one of the episodes that led to my divorce after we moved to Reno.
Gambling is rapidly becoming America's favorite past time. It is now more popular than all sporting events combined. "In 1995, Americans spent more on gambling than the U.S. government ...

Method Of Communication And Different Uses Of Communication
... first typesetting machine, the
Linotype, was patented in 1884 by the German-American Ottmar Mergenthaler.
In the meantime, postal services and moved from being privately to
nationally owned, and long distance postal services became an affordable option.
For the first time, an ordinary person could correspond with people in other
countries. A visual semaphore system was also implemented in both Europe and the
United States, providing a way of ‘echoing' messages nationally via large towers
placed in strategic positions; however this proved slow as each method had to be
verified to ensure message accuracy. ...

Pidgin: Dialect Of English Spoken On The Hawaiian Islands
... French, and much more. My father is part Hawaiian
and part Scottish. Being such I have to choose which lifestyle is right for me.
There is a tug-a-war between the Hawaiian part of me and the Haole part of me.
The two cultures that I consider myself, Scottish and Hawaiian, are both proud,
interesting, and contain their own prescriptions toward behavior. The pidgin
dialect is a major part of life in the lower class Hawaiian neighborhoods. For
most children in these neighborhoods it is the language spoken at home. The
other people of the islands look at this dialect as a sign of a poor education
and up-brin ...

Racism
... Racists from many years ago raise their
kids in clans and white supremacy groups and teach them the ways of hatred.
These kids grow up "brain-washed" that black people are their enemies and,
taught by example, will continue this trend (The Volume Library; 1988).
The Ku Klux Klan has been around since the end of the civil war. It is
a roller coaster of a history. From extreme power, to rapid decline, and
slow reemergence (Software Toolworks Encyclopedia; 1992). The clan, who is
notorious for its violence, has a relatively innocent beginning. It was
formed from some veterans from the confederate army and was firs ...

Gender Inbalances In School
... be a reason, but is turning your back going to help? No.
I believe that they are correct to say that the practices that went on in primary schools when today’s college students were there did not promote women in these fields. It may have changed since then, but today’s females have either no interest in these fields or are not capable of entering them. I know that they (females) can do the work but there may be glass walls preventing them from entering.
I don’t believe that it is a “fruitless” effort to engage in a way that would promote women in these fields. Since I have been in college I have c ...

Prohibiting Speech That Offends
... prohibiting speech that
offends any group based on race, gender, ethnicity, religion or sexual
orientation.
That's the wrong response, well-meaning or not. The First
Amendment to the United States Constitution protects speech no matter how
offensive its content. Speech codes adopted by government financed state
colleges and universities amount to government censorship, in violation of
the Constitution. And the ACLU believes that all campuses should adhere to
First Amendment principles because academic freedom is a bedrock of
education in a free society. No social institution is better suited to
fight bigotry ...

Greed
... the poor. Rockefeller was a snake. But the name-calling did not come from the consumers; it was the competing businesses that complained. The newspapers expanded on these comments, calling them "robber barons." These are inaccurate terms for these businessmen. They were not barons because they all started penniless and they were not robbers because they did not take it from anyone else.
Vanderbilt got rich by making travel and shipping faster, cheaper, and more luxurious. He built bigger, faster, and more efficient ships. He served food on his ships, which the customers liked and he lowered his costs. He lowered ...

The Concept Of Communication Style
... one myself. The friend
that I chose was my room mate Ryan Seslow. . Ryan and I have been friends since
highschool so he knows me very well. The person that I chose to complete the
acquaintance section was my friend Leslie Margasak. Leslie is my girlfriends
roommate therefore our communication is somewhat limited. Through the following
research and analysis I have created a table (Table:1) that shows the means for
my friend aquaitance, and myself.
The summaries and findings in which I calculated provided me with
insight of my dominant yet friendly communication style. It also provided me

Appearance Is Everything
... whose fault the breakup was. The audiences votes on who is the “loser”. First of all, it is obvious that the stories are fictional and the alleged couples are actors. But the real problem lies within the idea behind the show. Is that the biggest problem the world is facing today? Who to blame in some strange couples breakup? It is disturbing to know that the same audience members and at-home viewers that are voting on whom to place the blame, will one day be voting for the leaders of our country. Worse yet, they may someday be the leaders of our country.
The latest teen film to hit theaters is called Jawbreaker. ...

Reality Is Perception
... existence? Is the sensory perception of a fly
wrong just because it has over a 1000 eyes or is the way humans view the world
incorrect because we do not? A blind man can still help a person distinguish a
colour because no one perception is ever totally interpreted by only one sensory
organ. Many other animals on earth do not just rely on there sight for
information about their world. For instance fish in totally dark areas of the
ocean have no eyes and yet can still maneuver around in there environment by
sensing ripples in their area with special sense organs on their body. Birds
also seem to use the magnetic li ...
