How Western Imperialism Affects China And Japan
... in the 1800's , Europe thrust its way into the heart of the Middle
Kingdom, shattering and destroying its isolation forever. China would then be
involved in four wars during the nineteenth century ; Britain's opium war (1839-
1842), a second war (1856-1860) fought by British and French , the Sino-Japanese
war (1894-1895) , and a final western invasion involving British , French ,
German , Japanese and U.S troops (1899-1900). Chinese Emperors were compelled to
sign unequal treaties and were forced to open a number of ports , as well as

Our Living Shield: The First Amendment
... which stated that the
people of the Uni ted States had the "freedom of speech, or of the press;
or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the
Government..." The First Amendment was drafted by federalist Madison mainly
as a political tactic to abolish anti-federalist resistance to the
Constitution. After its passage in December of 1791, the First Amendment
remained more idealistic than realistic. The First Amendment remained a
set of ideals which were not to be carried out during its first century,
then progressed to more realistic terms during its latter half of
utilization.

Atomic Bomb
... with a minimum of casualties. What would have happened had the A-bomb not been used? The most obvious thing is that the war would have continued. US forces; therefore, would have had to invade the home island of Japan. Imagine the number of casualties that could have occurred if this would have happened! Also, Allied Forces would not only have to fight off the Japanese military, but they would have to defend themselves against the civilians of Japan as well. It was also a fact that the Japanese government had been equipping the commoners with any kind of weapon they could get their hands on. It is true that this coul ...

The First Amendment
... of doing
things. Many older men saw it as a safeguard of their personal liberties
and as a check on the abuse of power by the states. In England in 1665,
there was such a thing as The Conventicle Act. This act stated that anyone
over the age of sixteen was cecptible to imprisonment if they were caught
practicing any other religions other then the established one. In the years
to come people would come to America to seek religious freedom and they got
it. In 1811, when James Madison was president, he vetoed a bill passed by
Congress incorporating a church organization. England was also an influence
on how we handl ...

Hate Groups
... to become part of the in group. No one wants to be an outsider..or part of the out group, so they become affiliated with the in crowd. Then they feel a sense of belonging and security. It all comes down to peer pressure and being regarded as one of us. Another reason that comes to mind is using the group in general as a scapegoat. A person builds so much frustration and anger at something, and instead of going to the gym to vent their anger, they join a gang and let the idea of prejudice guide their anger to let out their emotions.
Sonoma County does not have the extent of gangs that Antelope Valley has, thank ...

School Safety
... policy. It is a matter of strengthening basic values, of teaching children right from wrong, of instilling in them respect for others. We each have a responsibility to work to end youth violence and to keep schools safe for children and for those who teach them. Youth violence in many schools has reached universal proportions. It is not only happening in our high schools, it has also made its way into our elementary and middle schools. Everyone seems to have a different perspective on why there is such a problem with . Some say it is the parents’ fault, some say it is the media, and others blame the schools. Y ...

Military Governments
... nobility and kings no longer
controlled weapons nor could prevent the disintegration of the feudal society.
Modern military governments usually occur after the military stages a
coup. A coup is the forceful deposition of a government by all or a portion of
the armed forces and installation of a new military government. Coups
ordinarily take place when the present government poses a threat to the state or
the status quo. Because the military controls more armed power than anyone in a
state, they have the ability to take over the government at any given time. In
Power and Choice, Shively questions the notion of th ...

Conflict Resolution
... or a True Disagreement. A misunderstanding is a failure to understand the other persons point. A true disagreement is when people want more than your explanation and further details; they want to change your mind. Define the Problem and Collect the Facts. The book states that the saying, "A problem well defined is half solved" is not far from the truth. It also states that at this stage it is helpful when everyone involved is allowed to define the problem. Clarify Perceptions. This can be done by asking the following questions. What does each party thing the conflict is about? Is the conflict over deeply h ...

Impact Of Abuse

within the childs mind. The abuse feels so wrong yet the abuser insits
it is okay, taking advantage of the childs mistrust and naivety. Below
are the thoughts of an abused victim as she thinks back to her abuse and
questions her father. It is an example of this mistrust as well as the
confusion which goes through a childs mind.
Since I was a little ten-year-old child, I had to deceive and hide from
the world and my mother that my father took a sexual interest in me.
Remember how you taught me that art of deceit? First you put me in a
situation that had to be kept a secret then you pledged me to sec ...
